Why I Do Not Offer Complimentary Consultations: A Board-Certified Child and Adolescent Psychologist’s Perspective
How a comprehensive initial assessment supports ethical, evidence-based psychological care
Seeking psychological care is an important decision, and it's natural to want to learn more about a psychologist's approach before making an appointment. Many people want to know whether they'll feel comfortable, understood, and supported. As a board-certified child and adolescent psychologist, I believe the initial assessment is a critical component of ethical, evidence-based psychological care.
While I understand this desire, I do not offer complimentary consultations. This reflects my commitment to ethical practice, the value of professional expertise, and the importance of beginning psychological services with a structured and clinically meaningful assessment process.
The Initial Assessment Is More Than an Introduction
Your initial appointment is much more than an opportunity to determine whether my expertise and approach are appropriate for your needs. It is a comprehensive clinical assessment designed to develop a detailed understanding of your concerns, personal history, current circumstances, and treatment goals.
During this appointment, I gather the information necessary to develop an evidence-based formulation of your presenting concerns and determine whether the services I provide are appropriate for your needs. Equally important, you have the opportunity to ask questions, experience my approach firsthand, and determine whether you feel comfortable working with me as your psychologist.
Choosing a psychologist is an important decision. A comprehensive assessment provides far more meaningful information than a brief introductory conversation and establishes the clinical foundation for safe, ethical, and effective psychological care.
Maintaining Professional and Ethical Standards
A successful psychologist–patient relationship depends on clear professional boundaries from the outset. Ethical practice requires a formal intake and assessment process before a professional relationship is established.
A brief consultation can unintentionally blur these boundaries or create uncertainty regarding confidentiality, informed consent, and professional expectations. Beginning with a structured assessment appointment ensures that we can carefully review your concerns, discuss informed consent, establish confidentiality, and ensure that psychological services begin within an ethical and professional framework.
Why I Do Not Offer Complimentary Consultations
A common question is why I do not provide free introductory consultations.
Effective psychological treatment requires commitment from both the psychologist and the patient. Attending a full initial assessment demonstrates a willingness to actively engage in the process and allows sufficient time for a meaningful evaluation rather than a brief introductory discussion.
A complimentary consultation may seem like a convenient way to determine whether my services are appropriate for your needs. However, meaningful assessment cannot be accomplished in a brief interaction. The initial appointment allows me to devote my full attention to understanding your concerns, evaluating your needs, and determining whether my expertise and scope of practice are appropriate for your circumstances.
Beginning with a formal assessment also establishes clear expectations, supports accountability, and reflects a shared commitment to the treatment process. This creates the strongest foundation for effective, respectful, and goal-oriented psychological care.
Valuing Professional Expertise
Providing psychological services requires years of university education, supervised clinical training, licensure, continuing professional education, and ongoing adherence to rigorous ethical and professional standards.
I am board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Board certification is a voluntary credential earned through an extensive peer-review process that evaluates advanced knowledge, clinical competence, and professional judgment. Although board certification is more commonly associated with medical specialties, only a relatively small proportion of licensed psychologists hold this credential. It reflects an additional commitment to clinical excellence, lifelong learning, and the highest standards of professional practice.
Like other regulated healthcare professionals, I provide specialized psychological services that reflect this extensive education, training, experience, and expertise. Charging for the initial assessment reflects the professional time, preparation, and clinical judgment involved in every appointment and reinforces that psychological care is a meaningful investment in your health and well-being.

A Thoughtful Beginning
My policy of charging for the initial assessment supports ethical practice, respects the value of professional psychological services, and ensures that every patient receives the time, attention, and clinical expertise they deserve.
Rather than viewing the first appointment simply as an opportunity to determine whether my services are appropriate for your needs, I encourage you to see it as the beginning of a comprehensive assessment process. It provides valuable insight into your concerns, establishes a strong clinical foundation, and allows us to determine together whether moving forward with psychological treatment is the most appropriate course of action.
Beginning psychological care is an important investment in your well-being. My goal is to ensure that every patient receives a thorough, ethical, and individualized assessment that lays the groundwork for meaningful and lasting change.
