PANS/PANDAS Treatment

Specialized Psychological Support for Children and Families

What Are PANS and PANDAS?

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) are conditions in which children experience a sudden and dramatic onset of symptoms such as:

  • Obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCD)

  • Motor and/or vocal tics

  • Severe, restrictive food intake

  • Severe anxiety

  • Mood swings or irritability

  • Behavioral regression

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or school performance

These symptoms are often linked to an immune response that affects brain functioning, frequently following an infection or other trigger.

My Treatment Approach

Treatment for PANS/PANDAS works best when it addresses both the medical and psychological aspects of the condition. While medical providers focus on underlying biological factors, psychological care helps children and families manage symptoms and restore daily functioning.

My approach is compassionate, structured, and tailored to each child’s needs. I focus on:

  • Reducing anxiety and emotional distress

  • Addressing obsessive-compulsive symptoms

  • Building coping and emotional regulation skills

  • Supporting a return to normal routines (school, social life, family activities)

  • Helping parents respond effectively to symptoms

Specialized Training and Experience

I have received advanced training in the treatment of PANS/PANDAS through work in a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to these conditions. During this time, I trained under the mentorship of a leading pioneer in PANS research.

In addition to clinical work, I have co-authored academic papers on PANS/PANDAS, contributing to the growing understanding of these complex conditions. I have also served as a board member of the Northwest PANS/PANDAS Network (NWPPN), supporting advocacy, education, and improved access to care for affected families.

This combination of clinical experience, research involvement, and leadership within the PANS/PANDAS community informs a treatment approach that is both evidence-based and deeply attuned to the unique challenges families face.

Evidence-Based Therapies

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps children understand how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. It provides practical tools to reduce anxiety and regain a sense of control.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is a specialized form of CBT that is highly effective for PANS/PANDAS and OCD. Children are gradually supported in facing fears while learning to resist compulsive behaviors in a safe and structured way.

Parent Coaching and Support
Parents play a critical role in recovery. I provide guidance on how to respond to symptoms, reduce unintentional reinforcement of compulsions, and create a supportive home environment.

Emotional and Behavioral Support
I help children rebuild confidence, manage frustration, and navigate the emotional impact of sudden symptom changes.

Collaboration with Medical Providers

Because PANS/PANDAS involve medical and neurological components, coordinated care is essential. When appropriate, I collaborate with pediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive treatment.

What to Expect

  • A thorough initial assessment

  • An individualized treatment plan

  • Regular sessions focused on skill-building and symptom reduction

  • Ongoing progress monitoring

  • Active family involvement throughout treatment
